The family moved to Berkeley in the early 1920s.
Grenade lived in Hawai'i while working for Matson. His daughter Nina spent many months there growing up and as an adult. Grenade also visited Japan regularly while working for another shipping company. He spoke Japanese and Nina has pictures of herself at age 3 in a kimono he brought home to her.
Grenade was married twice, to the same woman.
